Rabindra Dhungel, 30 august 2020. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman warned on Friday that the United States could ban Chinese social networking site Vichat if Chinese consumers could boycott Apple.
The remarks came as the Trump administration warned of a ban on the use of popular social networking sites such as WeChat and Tiktak.
US President Donald Trump announced a ban on Vichyat and Tiktak from mid-September this month.
Tensions between Beijing and Washington have risen sharply after President Trump threatened to ban social media, accusing it of endangering national security.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lichan said in a Twitter message on Friday that “if WeChat is banned in the United States, there will be no reason for Chinese to keep their iPhone and Apple products.”
Earlier in the day, Zhao had said that “many Chinese are calling for a ban on WeChat in the United States and for China to stop using the iPhone.”
He claimed that the US was systematically attacking non-US companies targeting Chinese apps.
Trade disputes between the world’s two superpowers persisted before Beijing warned of a boycott of US production.
The United States has also accused China of neglecting military activity in the South China Sea, its approach to Hong Kong, and the origin of the coronavirus and its prevention. China has denied the allegations.
