[Japanese PM Abe resigns]
Rabindra Dhungel, 28 august 2020. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has resigned over health reasons. Abe, who has been suffering from intestinal problems for a long time, has apologized and resigned.
He also apologized to the Japanese people for not being able to complete his term, saying that his illness did not affect the decision-making process.
According to state broadcaster NHK, 65-year-old Abe resigned because he did not want to run into government problems.
He had resigned from the PM’s post in 2007 due to health problems and has been the country’s executive leader since 2012. Abe is the longest-serving prime minister in Japanese history, with a term until 2021.
He has been suffering from intestinal inflammation since he was a child, and after visiting the hospital twice a week, the question arose as to whether Abe’s health was deteriorating. He did not say why he went to the hospital. But once the details of the eight-hour hospital stay have been received.
Earlier, officials from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party denied the allegations in a statement issued Friday stating “Similar, baseless allegations concerning Abe’s candidacy have been made more than once. In the event that the Prime Minister fails to take office, the caretaker Prime Minister is appointed under Japanese law. But there is no limit on how long the caretaker Prime Minister will remain in office.
